- W2362487913 abstract "The kinetics of the slow combustion of cyclopentane in uncoated Pyrex vessels and in vessels coated with boric acid, potassium chloride and sodium hydroxide have been studied by means of pressure-time curves at temperatures around 400 'C and at pressures below atmospheric. In coated and uncoated vessels there was a period of negligible pressure change followed by an exponential acceleration to the maximum rate which varied for a 'standard' experiment in the order B203> uncoated, KCI> NaOH. However, the effect of surface on the rate (p) was much less marked than that observed for other oxidations in the 'high-temperature' range. The accelerating effect of added nitrogen was also small even using a NaOH-coated vessel, and packing an uncoated vessel retarded the reaction only slightly. The variation of the maximum oxidation rate, net branching factor, and reciprocal induction period with pressures of oxygen and cyclopentane was similar with all surface conditions. For instance, Pmax. increased rapidly with increasing pressure of either reactant at first (apparent order about 2), but at higher pressures the relationship became linear. Cool flames were observed in uncoated and boric-acid-coated vessels below 300 'C and with all four surface conditions the rate-temperature curves exhibited a minimum. The results are compared with those of studies of the slow combustion of other fuels in the 'high-temperature' range. It is concluded that the oxidation is a free-radical chain reaction with delayed branching, and that HO2 radicals are of minor importance, the main termination step being homogeneous." @default.
