- W2363104096 abstract "This paper deals with the growth of the carp in the San-Men-Hsia reservoir before and after the filling of watec. A total of 340 specimens of Cyprinus carpio were collected from Tung-Kuan region during the period from April, 1959 to July, 1962.Tung-Kuan region is situated in the centre of the three branches of the ⊥-shaped reservoir. This region had been in a muddy-river state before November, 1960, but when it was filled with water for the first time in November, it came to be in a clear-water state until May, 1961. When the water was drained off, it was in a muddy-river state again from June to September, 1961. It was filled with clear water again in October, 1961; and it was in a muddy-river state for a third time from November, 1961 to the end of this survey in 1962.The ages of the carps were determined by scale reading. Our materials showed 4 age groups, among which the specimens of two-years-old groups were predominant and the next were those of three-years-old groups (table 2). The annuli on the scale (table 1) were formed during the breeding period from April to July, mostly in May.There are some differences among the body lengths of the same age groups growing in different years, especially in the years before and after the water filling of the reservoir, such as the difference of average body length between two-years-old groups in 1962 and those in 1959 is 5.17 ± 1.36cm; and that between the three-years-old groups in 1962 and those in 1959 is 3.84 ± 0.68 cm. Obviously the differences are significant statistically. It is better to determine the length of carps by the Lea's Formula, i.e. Ln=Vn/V L.In order to test the difference between the means of two samples, some tests for the significance of the difference of two sample means have been carried out. The results of calculation show that the difference of average body lengths between the one-year-old groups or two-years-old groups in 1961 and the same age groups in 1959, or in 1958, or in 1957 was so large as to make t or y greater than 3, either in the male or in the female. Such difference is of course significant. It is the same in the case of the body weight of the two-years-old groups and those in 1960 is 130.01 ± 20.38g; and that of three-years-old groups in 1962 and those in 1960 is 192.34 ± 26.44 g.Analysis of the annual growth increments shows a similar regularity. The increments in the period after the water filling are higher than those of any year before the filling of the reservoir (table 5).The relative fatness of the carps in the year 1961, when Tung-Kuan was filled with clear water in most months is 2.9 ± 0.17, which is significantly higher than in any year before the filling of the reservoir. The means of fatness in 1961 exceed 0.65 ±0.25 in comparison with those in 1959 and exceed 0.48 ± 0.17 in comparison with those in 1962.The result of this survey shows that the changes of environmental conditions are of much significance with respect to the growth of Cyprinus carpio in the reservoir before and after the filling of the water. Among the environmental factors, the increase in the volume of the water body and the improvements of the degree of concentration of the natural foods during the term when the reservoir was filled are the most important ones. The volume of the water body in the Tung-Kuan region was increased 70-100 times, but the carps did not increase so quickly in number. Thus, their population density must be strongly decreased. (1933) and (1948) have shown that the body length and the body weight of the carp decrease when its population density increases. The expansion of the water body in the present reservoir is of course favorable to the growth of fishes. Before filling, the concentration of phytoplank-ton were 300,000 to 6,500,000 cells/1 and there were no zooplanktons. The examination of the intestinal contents of the carps showed that the vegetable debris and Ulothrix were dominante. But after the filling of water, the density of phytoplankton became 700,000-328,660,000 cells/1 and that of zooplankton was 12,000 to 145," @default.
