- W2363336639 abstract "In synthetic media the tissue respiration of the kidney, brain and liver of both albino rats and guinea-pigs are inhibited by citrinin. The sensitivity of these three organs is in the decreasing order mentioned. Anaerobic glycolysis of guinea-pig's brain is not significantly affected. Citrinin inhibits the oxidation but not the dehydrogenation of succinic acid by the kidney slices of the guinea-pig. An inhibition on the dehydrogenation of endogenous substrates of the kidney is also not demonstrable. In agreement with Michaelis' findings, We have found that citrinin inhibits the respiration of Staphylococcus aureus to a considerably higher degree than that of E. coli However, the citrinin effect depends on media used. The addition of sera may not only prevent the inhibition of the tissue respiration by the antibiotic but can also bring the respiration back to the norimal or even to a slightly highor levd. The pro tection on staphylococci by the serum has also been noticed though any stimulation has not been observed. In the juice of the heat-denatured serum of the guinea-pig a thermostable factor has been demonstrated which could revert the action of the citrinin. It is most likely non-protein in nature, and is destroyed on dialysis and not identical with glucose, pyruvate, fatty acids, amino acids, glucose-1-phosphate, or phosphopyruvic acid." @default.
