- W2364194016 abstract "The production system paradigm is widely used in Artificial Intelligence for building expert systems. Their wide use has drawn attention to the fact that significant improvements will have to be made in their execution speed in order to obtain a performance that will make the paradigm a programming alternative in commercial programs and real-time applications. This thesis presents a model for the parallel execution of production systems. The model exploits parallelism in all three phases of the production system cycle.In the match phase of the cycle, condition-level parallelism is exploited in a Rete network. Parallelism is introduced into the conflict resolution phase by partitioning the production system into mutually exclusive subsets of rules on which conflict resolution is independently applied. The dominant instantiation from each partition is considered for simultaneous firing during the act phase. Firing more than one rule in parallel during the act phase increases the level of parallelism in the production system cycle but creates a problem of interference between the firing rules. This problem is addressed in this thesis and an algorithm that can detect interference between rules firing at run-time is presented.The thesis also presents a multiprocessor architecture to support the model developed. The architecture consists of homogeneous CMOS RISC-like processing elements connected in a heterogeneous topology. The architecture consists of three modules connected through high speed packet buses. Within a module, the topology of the processing elements is homogeneous and is tailored to the communication pattern of the processes implementing the portion of the module it supports.Finally, the thesis presents results of benchmark programs executed on a register transfer level simulator written for the architecture. These simulations provide an insight into the capabilities of the architecture and the data gathered from the simulations will guide future architectural enhancements." @default.
