- W2364457435 abstract "The method for precisely measuring Mg/Ca ratios in foraminifer shells is established using inductively coupled plasma atomic spectrometry (ICP-AES). Mg/Ca ratios in foraminifer shells are essential for reconstructing the sea surface temperature (SST) records. Errors from ICP-AES measurement, effect of residual Fe-Mn coatings, possible contamination during the cleaning procedure for foraminifer shells, and inhomogeneity of Mg/Ca ratios in different shells may all contribute to the errors of the final SST records. In detail, the machine measurement by ICP-AES generally presents an external precision for Mg/Ca ratios better than 0.3%, which may cause SST errors less than ±0.1 ℃. Mg and Ca concentrate in the residual Fe-Mn coatings in the foraminifer shells. This may lead to a value 0.2%~2.7% higher for the analyzed Mg/Ca ratios, which contributes to the temperatures errors less than 0.2 ℃. Inhomogeneity of the Mg/Ca ratios in different shells of the same sediments gives main errors to temperature, as relative deviations of Mg/Ca ratios in different foraminifer shells are up to 0.2%~3.6%, which may contribute ±(0.2~0.4) ℃ to the temperature errors. Considering all the factors that may contribute to the errors of the Mg/Ca SST records, the overall errors for the temperature reconstructing from the foraminifer shells should be ±0.5 ℃. This precision meets the requirement of studying SST changes within glacial-interglacial cycles." @default.
