- W23652200 abstract "Forty-seven cases of plasma cell leukemia reported in the literature in the last twenty years and our additional ten cases are reviewed. The clinical picture varies from the terminal leukemic stage of otherwise classic multiple myeloma to the a priori fulminant course of acute leukemia. Two differences between our cases and those reported previously are emphasized. The first concerns the observation that immunoglobulin abnormalities appear in plasma cell leukemia with the same frequency and are of the same types as in multiple myeloma. In two of our patients purified M components did not differ from myeloma globulins of the same light and heavy chain types. The second observation is that modern therapy with steroids and immunosuppressive drugs, used in various combinations, was ineffective in altering the course or the prognosis of the disease. No correlation was found between the cytology of the plasmacytes or the type of immunoglobulin produced and the course of the disease. The variable clinical course of plasma cell leukemia, appearance of simultaneous or subsequent combinations of myeloma, macroglobulinemia and plasma cell leukemia are in favor of the concept that all these diseases should be included in the common group of immunocytic dyscrasias." @default.
