- W2365436039 abstract "Objective To explore the epidemiological features, potential risk factors of typhoid and effective measures for control of typhoid fever, and to select the field sites of surveillance. Methods A special epidemiological investigation was carried out in Gulin City and its surrounding areas from the end of 1999 to early 2000. Results The incidence rate of typhoid and paratyphoid fevers in Guilin rose from 15.84 per 100,000 population in 1990 to 91.88 per 100,000 population in 2000, up 480.06%. The cases were reported in 83.11% of townships. The proportion of student patients increased from 21.27% in 1995 to 32.34% in 1999. S. paratyphi A had become the predominant serotype, accounting for 98.41% of typhoid cases in 2000. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles showed that S. paratyphi A was sensitive to norfloxacin, chloramphenicol and gentamycin, whereas 82.40% of the organism represented resistance to sulfamethoxazole. Of the 22 schools monitored for drinking water sources, only 22.72% reached the hygienic standards. Conclusion It is important to strengthen the surveillance of typhoid and to early detect and treat patients. Further expansion of capital investment by government and perfection of basic sanitary facilities brook no delay." @default.
