- W2367349487 abstract "The large amplitude vibration particularly the wind rain induced vibration on cables of cable stayed bridges has been paid more attention worldwide in recent decade. Several approaches to mitigate this problem are proposed and/or implemented with the aid of secondary cable or oil damper or dynamics absorbers, and stay cables vibration control by means of magneto rheological (MR) dampers will be a new exploration. The Dongting Lake Bridge is a three tower cable stayed, pre stress concrete bridge and is located to Yueyang city of Hunan province in China. Large amplitude wind rain induced vibration on this bridge has been observed for three times only a half year after opening traffic, and maximal amplitude of vibration is about seven to eight times of cable diameter (peak to peak). To estimate efficiency of mitigating cable vibration using MR dampers, a serial of field tests on the bridge are performed. Step relaxation is used to identify nature frequencies of cable system with PSD(power spectral density) of the decay of acceleration responses. Sinusoidal excitation is used to excite the cable and excitation frequency is set up to near resonance frequency by means of the frequency changer. When cable vibration takes into a steady amplitude, the excitation is removed with the trigger device and then vibration amplitude of cable will decay with corresponding modal damping ratio. From the decay of acceleration responses the modal damping ratio is estimated by a time domain curve fit procedure. Test results show that first five modal frequencies increase 3%~4% and modal damping ratio rise 3~6 times after installing MR damper and input to MR damper voltage changing from 0?V to 10?V. Efficiencies of cable vibration control have been verified by actual wind rain induced vibration. These prove that MR dampers are an effective means of cable vibration control and will supply a good guidance on use of MR damper in cable stayed bridges." @default.
