- W2368757475 abstract "From the time modern linguistics was founded in early twentieth century, distinctions made by Saussure between langue(language system) and parole(actual speech) and between internal and external studies of language have long been strictly followed by linguists in their investigation of language. Therefore the focus has almost always been upon language itself as a system of forms, whereas the context in which language is used has often been treated as marginal and supplementary and excluded from the scope of mainstream linguistic survey. However, the history of linguistics in the last century has clearly indicated that it would be impossible to conduct any comprehensive study of language without taking context seriously into consideration.Context in linguistics is basically a theoretical construct, which often determines what and how much the study can achieve. How to construct context is a very important issue in linguistics. In the past one hundred years or so,there have been great changes in the way context is theoretically constructed in linguistics.Context in the eyes of those linguists who look(″inwardly″) and take language as autonomous is just what language items that occur before and/or after a word,a phrase or a longer utterance.Obviously, context in this sense is too narrow to contribute powerfully to studying language and therefore it has been questioned by many other linguists, especially those whose studies are functionally oriented. In their studies, context is employed to refer to the broader social situation in which language is used and considered as an essential factor that can decide how language works and what it does. This extended view of context has placed context in a position as equally important as that of language and attempted to establish correspondence between contextual factors and language items and their uses, emphasizing their interdependence upon each other. However,as context has become a very complex and global concept involving more and more in the world, the language user seems to have been somewhat obscured and his importance underestimated.New approaches to context have been put forward to fully recognize the central roles played by the language user and to view context mainly as the result of the efforts of the language user in communication instead of outward situation independent of the language user.In a sense, context constructed in this way, with the language user foregrounded,is rather cognitive and assumptive than real and autonomous, and it may be able to better account for what is happening when language is used in human communication. In a word, context should not be constructed as closed, static, objectively existing, given, and separate from and opposite to language, but as more open, dynamic, interactive, internalized by the user, generated and constantly changed, and inserted into language and its use inseparable from it.The changes in the way context is theoretically constructed reflect the irreversible tendency of linguistics in the twenty-first century, which may bring about some breakthrough in linguistic study in the foreseeable future.Any linguist who does not want to miss the chance of making it should be fully aware of this." @default.
