- W2369403904 abstract "A new mechanism, which accounts for the direct excitation of electromagnetic waves by relativistic particles moving in random magnetic fields, is considered. We are then able to study maser-type wave excitations by slightly anisotropic particle distribution functions as well as electromagnetic wave emissions in beam-plasma interactions The purpose of the present letter is to point out a new instability in a plasma with relativistic particles in a random magnetic field, and to show that high frequency electromagnetic waves can be excited. The largest generated frequencies are here not related to the particle energies e (cf. the case where particles (rest mass m) move in a rippled (wavelength 2n/ko) random magnetic field when O.)ma x ~ 2koce.Z/(mc2) 2 ) and our effect appears thus for arbitrarily large frequencies, although with decreasing growth rate (7o~ ~ 09-2). In the case of instability (7~o > 0) the wave is accordingly amplified if the plasma is optically thick at the corresponding frequency. In addition, the threshold of the instability we are going to mention does not depend on the frequency, which means that very high frequencies may be unstable. Random magnetic fields as well as relativistic particles are present in many space plasmas, and the plasma volumes are often so large that very high frequency electro- magnetic waves can be amplified. Thus we think that our effect can be of relevance for problems concerning the emission of electromagnetic waves by relativistic particles in space plasmas (Kaplan and Tsytovich, 1973). We shall show that even a very small anisotropy of the particle distribution function is sufficient for wave amplification. The cosmic ray electrons and ions are indeed always slightly anisotropicaUy distributed, due to particle diffusion in space. We shall here limit ourselves to the case where the energies of the particles are so large that the curvature of the particle motion in the random fields can be neglected, i.e. the characteristic lengths of the magnetic field inhomogeneities are much smaller than the Larmor radii." @default.
