- W2369671804 abstract "The cross-equatorial meridional overturning circulation in the northern Indian Ocean (north of (7°S)) and its interannual variability are studied based on SODA (Simple Ocean Data Assimilation) data of 50 years (1950～1999). It is shown that, for annual mean, the northward inflow in the upper layer that crosses the equator in the Indian Ocean ultimately moves back southward through the Ekman layer, with a surface flow in the opposite direction (compared to the Ekman flow) in the mixed layer near the equator. The northward inflow is mainly composed of a west boundary current at a depth of at least 500m and the southward flow across the equator has a larger magnitude in the western part of the basin. There is significant interannual variability in the cross-equatorial meridional overturning circulation with a period of about 4 years. The interannual variability of such circulation is intimately related to that of surface wind stress. Two indices describing the anomaly of the cross-equatorial circulation are proposed." @default.
