- W2371714369 abstract "The aging of the population, first observed in developed countries, is now a phenomenon in the developing world. Projections by the World Health Organization for the year 2025 include Brazil among the ten countries of the world with the highest contingent of people aged 60 years and over. The proportion of elderly in Brazil increased from 6.1% in 1980 to 7.9% in 1996, and it is estimated in 14% for the year 2025. This demographic transformation is associated with an epidemiological transition which results in an important increasing demand for health and social services. The aging implies a higher number of diseases, with the greatest need for health care services concentrated within this group. However, diseases and physical limitations are not inevitable consequences of aging. A significant part of the morbidity causes in the elderly can be reduced with the structural changes in health system, aiming to promote and protect health, as well as to make an early diagnosis and to provide treatment of chronic diseases and associated disabilities. The objective of this study was to estimate the magnitude of elderly population in Brazil and to describe the multidimensional problems involved in aging. The authors conducted a review of articles published in scientific journals about morbidity, mortality, demand for health care services and treatment alternatives. This information could be useful to identify the groups at greatest risk and to develop intervention strategies in order to produce a positive impact on the quality of life of older adults." @default.
