- W2372063358 abstract "Soil respiration and CO2 evolution has been considered as an active and rapid CO2 gas exchange pathway between the soil and atmospheric interface in the terrestrial ecosystem. However, the potential of soil organic carbon mineralization and CO2 evolution has been often studied only by laboratory incubation of disturbed soil samples. Undisturbed soil columns and bulk soil samples were collected after rice harvest from a typical paddy soils in the Tai Lake region, Jiangsu, China. Incubation using disturbed soil samples and soil columns were respectively conducted under aerobic condition at constantly 25 centigrade for 25 days. CO2 evolved were monitored by closed chamber method using syringe gas sampler and GC determination to calculate the respiration activity. The mean respiration and CO2 production rate ranged from CO2-C 12.85 mg?kg-1?d-1 to CO2-C 15.17 mg?kg-1?d-1 for conventional incubation using disturbed sample and from CO2-C 2.15 mg?kg-1?d-1 to CO2-C 4.47 mg?kg-1?d-1 for using undisturbed column samples, with the later being comparable to the reported field observation values. Moreover, there was also significant difference in the SOC minerali- zation dynamics during incubation between of the disturbed samples and of the undisturbed soil columns. The difference in mineral- ized carbon pool between of the disturbed samples and of the undisturbed samples suggested a portion of mineralizable carbon pe- dologically protected, being around 2% of the total organic carbon. This was somewhat higher than that reported by Pulleman Marinissen (2004) from the grassland soil aggregates. The results here could imply that laboratory incubation using disturbed sam- ples may overestimate the soil potential of organic carbon minralization and CO2 production from the paddy soils. However, the soil protection mechanism of mineralizable carbon deserves further study in the future." @default.
