- W23728887 abstract "Chemical remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbon waste, both at the source and in the environment, is an ongoing and pressing problem. One method for the detoxification of halogenated hydrocarbons is the alkaline polyethylene glycolate (APEG) process. This has been used on soils and sludges contaminated with halogenated aromatics such as dioxins. The contaminated soil is mixed with KOH in DMSO and polyethylene glycol (PEG 400). The halogenated aromatic is then converted to the PEG ether and KCl. A similar approach is being pursued by DOE and Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL) in the VOCs in Arid Soils Project. In this process, called steam reforming, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform are hydrolyzed by reaction with steam at 600{degrees}C. The method that we investigated is analogous to the steam reforming process but employs much milder conditions to convert halogenated hydrocarbon to alcohols. These non-toxic alcohols can then be recovered and used either for commercial purposes or further processed by such methods as microbial biodegradation without the complicating feature of the halogen moiety. The basis of this method is the use of various molybdate salts as effective inexpensive catalysts for the hydrolytic dechlorination process. We have previously demonstrated that the molybdate dianion has remarkable nucleophilic reactivitymore » towards a variety of electrophiles, including esters and alkyl and aryl halides.« less" @default.
