- W2373748102 abstract "The Ideas of three-orders, which have evoked fairly wide discussions among scholars since the end of the 19th century, refer to a phenomenon in the history of Medieval Western Europe. The relationship among the Three Orders is, among other things, especially attractive. It is hierarchically unequal in the common sense, with the order of the clergy on the top. Yet the followers of the structuralism consider it a tri-functional ideology of ancient Indo-European nations which survived out of Christianity, with the form of prayers, fighters, farmers in the medieval Western Europe whose relationships are cooperative and equal. But there are shortcomings so far as the theory and the methodology are concerned: either isolating it from the historical context, or taking the part as the whole. In fact, the relationship of the Orders is complicated, neither totally unequal nor equal, but simultaneously unequal and equal. The relationship is anything but fixed. It changes with the transformation of the time, place and person all along, during which the conflict of the Papal and the royal over superior power on earth played a key role. The ideas of the Three Orders in the Medieval Western Europe came into being gradually from the idea of the Order of Christianity. The founding of the feudal society and the involvement into secular politics by the church laid foundations for its being, which was brought forth by the burdensome military service and general private wars among the feudal lords. The relationship also changed greatly along the development of the conflict among churches and states, and resulted in two understandings: hierarchally unequal for the Papalism but functionally equal for the Royalism, and the latter eventually prevailed over the former with the enhancement of the royal power and the national consciousness." @default.
