- W2374236552 abstract "With the techniques of micropipettes and iontophoresis, the effects of opiate receptor agonist, etorphine, and opiate receptor antagonist, naloxone, on evoked discharge of thalamic units in the area of n. lateralis anterior were studied in rabbits.A total of 90 units including 63 activated and 27 inhibited by intensive electric stimulation of sural nerve were investigated.Of the 63 activated units, 31 were convergent and 32 nonconvergent. Among the latter, 11 were of long latency (100-500 msec) and 21 of short latency. Etorphine, when applied iontophoretically, could strikingly depress the late burst of evoked discharge in all of the 22 convergent units tested, leaving the initial burst unaffected. The depressive effect of etorphine could be reversed by naloxone. Etorphine also had the same depressive effect on the long latency response in 8 nonconvergent units but without effect on the short latency response of 11 ones.Of the 27 inhibited units, 7 were characterized by an inhibition of discharge after a short, initial burst (type Ⅰ), and 20 by an inhibition of spontaneous discharge of long latency only (type Ⅱ). Among the 5 inhibited units tested, etorphine enhanced inhibition only in 1 unit which was weakly inhibited by nerve stimulation prior to drug iontophoresis; whereas the other 4 were unaffected. However, naloxone could release 11 out of 12 units from inhibition by the strong electric stimulation. It is interesting to note that the response pattern of the convergent excited and the inhibited units (type Ⅰ) changed reciprocally after iontophoretic application of etorphine and naloxone to these units respectively. These results suggest that the transmission of small fiber input in the thalamic area of n. lateralis anterior is controlled by the interaction between endorphins and opiate receptors." @default.
