- W237432887 abstract "Macintosh in Administration Administrative use of computers has expanded dramatically in the past several years. Tasks once handled by hand have become automated, and jobs once left to mainframes have moved to microcomputers. Today scheduling, attendance, inventory, manipulating data for what-if scenarios, planning budgets, tracking finances, creating presentations, and general communications are quickly done on micros. Four years ago, IBM PCs and compatibles were the only personal computers with enough power and storage to handle financial and educational management. Now the Macintosh SE and especially the Macintosh II offer greater speed, storage capacity, and functionality than their predecessors. Over the past year, these machines have moved steadily into offices, schools, districts, and college and university departments, where they are being used in creative ways to solve both day-to-day and long-range administrative problems. General Programs Currently, most higher-ed administrative work on the Macintosh involves general programs, e.g., MacWrite and Microsoft Word for word processing, Microsoft Excel for spreadsheets, 4th Dimension for database packages and Microsoft Works to integrate these functions, rather than applications developed to address specific administrative needs. These uses, emphasizing productivity and efficiency, are often very sophisticated. In addition, Macs are communicating with other microcomputers over local area networks and are being used as terminal emulators to access data on mini and mainframe computers over broadband-based networks in campuswide systems. Long-time Mac users, such as the University of Chicago, Dartmouth College, and Princeton University, illustrate this trend. In the Computation Center at the University of Chicago, all budgeting is done with Microsoft Excel on a Mac SE or Mac II using classic what-if analysis on data downloaded from the mainframe. Data also is downloaded to the Mac for monthly reports. Says George Bateman, the center's assistant director for information technology, quality of financial reporting has improved dramatically since the advent of the Mac use. Payroll to Prescriptions A partial list of Macintosh users at Chicago also includes the campus budget office for what-if analysis, the financial aid office, the admissions and advertising arenas and the undergraduate dean's office. The physical planning and operations department uses Macs for both costing and tracking projects and for design. Human resources management used them to support development of a new payroll program. The pharmacy manages inventory, logs prescription data, provides prescription information and logs sales. Protessors, too, correspond with students and with other offices using networked Macs. In addition to the usual uses, some departments track potential hires. Emulation At Dartmouth, Terminal emulation receives heavy administrative usage, says Roland Ron Peixotto, director of management information systems. Darterminal, developed there, allows Mac users to access the campus network through the Apple bus. A message can be sent from one office to another where it is printed on a laser printer. Transcripts are printed in the registrar's office, providing complete control over printing Macs are in the budget and publications offices as well. In various offices at Princeton, Macs, IBM PCs and OBM PS/2s are hooked together using a TOPS card. Campuswide access is available over TigerNet, the name the university has given to its widearea Ethernet that can connect local area networks into IBM and VAX computers. In addition, all phototypesetting is hooked to a Mac, and data is transferred to a Linotronic 300, which uses the PostScript language. While these uses are all based on general programs, Mac-Registrar from Cooke Publications is an exception to the almost total lack of administrative-specific software at this level. …" @default.
