- W2374865718 abstract "This paper discusses the role of the research department in a service provision organisation, and the benefits and challenges of allied health therapists conducting and evaluating research. Novita Children's Services Inc, formerly The Crippled Children's Association of SA Inc, provides therapy, equipment and family support services to over 1000 children in South Australia with physical and severe multiple disabilities. Children have cerebral palsy (approximately 65%), muscular dystrophy, spina bifida or other conditions that result in a permanent physical disability Novita employs occupational therapists, orthotists, physiotherapists, psychologists, rehabilitation engineers, speech pathologists and social workers, totalling over 150 staff. Services are delivered in the clients' homes, kindergartens, and schools or in community settings by multidisciplinary teams of therapists from five regional offices in the Adelaide metropolitan area. Staff from each metropolitan office also visit one or more country areas to support country families and local service providers. Bax summarised a discussion of international experts on the management of children with a physical disability, highlighting that best-practice services should be family-centred (ie parents in the earlier stages and children themselves should be involved in determining needs and how they should be met), and that services should be provided by a multidisciplinary team. At Novita, services are provided using family- centred philosophies using community-based models. There is a recognised lack of research into efficacy of many treatments provided to a child with physical disability. Thus, a Clinical Research department was established in 1999 at Novita, to conduct research into the most effective and efficient clinical assessments and interventions for clients of Novita and their families. The department has a manager and three senior therapists, who also provide clinical services to clients. Other staff also initiate ideas, and are often involved in conducting the research with Clinical Research department support. Some projects are conducted jointly with other agencies and academic institutions. All project ideas are initially evaluated by a Clinical Research Subcommittee. Projects must align with organisational strategic directions and deliver meaningful outcomes for clients, families and staff. Depending on project outcomes, a Subcommittee on Research into Services examines the findings and makes recommendations to management on practice changes. The department has been successful in presenting relevant findings in newsletters and journals, and at conferences. (author abstract)" @default.
