- W2375200894 abstract "During the first half of the 20th century,schistosomiasis was widespread in the Yangtze River Valley.Ethnographic works and annals of local history indicate that fecal pollution played an important role in causing and intensifying the pandemic.Commodes for excreta disposal and the agricultural use of night soil were two fine Chinese folk practices,which,if utilized appropriately,were both sanitary and practical,changing waste materials into things of value and helping to conserve water and soil and protect the environment in the long term.However,human excreta are also the sources of some 30 infectious and parasitic diseases,including schistosomiasis.Despite that,as the society lacked a modern consciousness of sanitation and controlling mechanisms at the time,the disposal and agricultural use of night soil were largely left in the hands of the handlers and farmers.As a result,schistosome eggs constantly found loopholes to enter water networks via excreta.Looking into specific patterns and the severity of fecal pollution in urban and rural settings,this article explores the cultural etiology of schistosomiasis." @default.
