- W237782551 abstract "My mother always warned me about becoming an educated fool. Thanks to Portia Simpson-Miller's recent victory as the first female prime minister of Jamaica, I have come to realize the potency of the oxymoronic pair of words used to describe people with a traditional education, which sometimes cripples common sense. On Feb. 25 at a People's National Party's delegate conference in Jamaica, the world witnessed a wonderful thing. Delegates rejected the traditional definition of education and affirmed a different dimension of it: emotional intelligence. Simpson-Miller, the new leader of the PNP party, personifies emotional intelligence. Of the four candidates who ran to replace Prime Minister Percival J. Patterson, she connects the most with Jamaicans home and abroad. Rather, she ignites a crowd. When people learned she trumped three men in the party election, the island reverberated with joy. This euphoria evident among Jamaicans from all socio-economic level and across party lines is unprecedented. last time I saw something like this was when Michael Manley was first elected. The reaction from people was even bigger than the one for Manley, said Hopeton Dennie, a veteran journalist. Simpson-Miller has demonstrated that EI mattered more than IQ for success in life. We should now get hip to that. Intelligence Matters One's intelligence quotient in English and math is considered the leading determinant of success. This has been our narrow view of intelligence for decades until Harvard professor Howard Gardner's introduction of Multiple Intelligence and Daniel Goldman's book, Emotional Intelligence: Why it matters more than IQ. Gardner posits there are many types of intelligence. He highlights seven: visual, verbal, logical, kinesthetic, musical, intrapersonal and interpersonal. Goldman's book outlines how critical EI, also known as interpersonal skills, can be to a successful life at home, school and business. He defines emotional intelligence in terms of the ability to love and be loved by friends, partner and family members. Since the beginning of time, though, EI has been paramount to success in all aspect of life. Before Gardner and Goldman, African people have been using a holistic approach to determine people's worth. Our ancestors used emotional intelligence and common sense - PhDs - to free themselves from slavery. (Yes. Abolitionists helped, too). The aim here is to devalue doctorate degrees but to demonstrate that some people with education fail to use it wisely. Brilliant Comeback Simpson-Miller used her education wisely. Her high emotional intelligence complements her education and contributes to her success in work as well as play. This is a significant thread woven into the Simpson-Miller story in a region with a high per capita of people with PhDs. During the lengthy campaign leading up to the special election, Simpson-Miller opponents painted her as not educated enough. One rival pointedly said the three male candidates have two PhDs and a medical degree. She has none. Of course, the testosterone level was also suffocating. But true to her high level of emotional intelligence, she ignored the invectives and pressed on with the skill of a smart and seasoned politician. …" @default.
