- W2377881014 abstract "Objective To explore the characteristics of cerebral metabolism in depression after stroke by using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).Methods Thirty post-stroke patients with depression (PSD) [male∶female, 24∶6; mean age, (70±4) years], 30 post-stroke patients without depression (no-PSD) [25∶5;(70±5) years], and 20 normal age marched controls [17∶3; (67±5) years] were involved. MRS brain scans were obtained on all participants, the N-acetyl aspartate/creatine (NAA/Cr) and Choline/Creatine (Cho/Cr) ratios were compared between groups.Results The PSD patients had lower NAA/Cr ratios in bilateral temporal lobes and thalamencephalon, compared to that in no-PSD patients and normal controls (P0.05). The NAA/Cr ratios in bilateral thalamencephalon were significant lower in PSD patients than in no-PSD patients (P0.01), but were no differences in bilateral temporal lobe areas between both the groups. There were no significantly difference in NAA/Cr ratios between no-PSD patients and controls. PSD patients had significantly higher Cho/Cr ratios in bilateral temporal lobes, and left thalamencephalon compared to no-PSD patients and normal controls. The Cho/Cr ratios existed no-symmetry in the PSD patients, with higher in the left than in the right (P0.01). Hamilton Depression Scale scores were positively correlated to Cho/Cr ratios in left and right temporal lobes (left: r=0.454, P=0.012; right: r=0.373, P=0.042).Conclusion The results suggest that the lower NAA/Cr ratios in bilateral thalamencephalon and no-symmetry higher Cho/Cr ratios in bilateral temporal and thalamencephalon may be helpful to distinguish PSD patients from no-PSD patients." @default.
