- W2378167465 abstract "A late Pleistocene (Sangamon) marine terrace deposit near Goleta, Santa Barbara County, California, has yielded an open-coast, Neuvan (?) province biofacies represented by at least 116 taxa including 93 molluscan and 18 foraminiferal species. The mollusks generally inhabited an exposed rocky-shore to level-bottom inner sublittoral biotope, and the assemblage is broadly comparable to the Tellina bodegensis-Forreria belcheri and Mytilus californianus-Littorina planaxis Pacific Coast Pleistocene communities of Valentine (1961). All taxa are known to be living, although the mollusks include a moderately large extralimital northern element. INTRODUCTION 1 to 3 foot thick fossiliferous marine deposit is exposed almost continuously along the coastal bluffs of the elevated coastal block (Dibblee, 1966), 2.5 miles southwest of Goleta, Santa Barbara County, California, and has been penetrated by building cores on the University of California, Santa Barbara campus (Dr. Keith Macdonald, oral comm., 1970). The deposit rests with sharp angular unconformity on a marine terrace 7 to 20 feet above the modern beach and eroded into the underlying, north-northeastward dipping diatomaceous shale of the Pliocene Sisquoc Formation. The deposit is conformably overlain by unfossiliferous alluvium-colluvium. The deposit was studied at 100 foot intervals (where exposed), from the foot of Camino Majorca Road, Isla Vista, west to Coal Oil (Textfig. 1). Observations on lateral changes in faunal composition and the character of the terrace deposit are made with respect to Locality 1, which was studied in detail. A molluscan fauna totaling 56 species is reported by Oldroyd and Grant (1931, p. 91) from about a mile and a half west of Goleta Point (Locality 1 ?), and several specimens from the deposit are discussed and illustrated by Grant and Gale (1931). ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer is indebted to Dr. Robert Arnal, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, for identification of the Foraminiferida. Dr. Calvin Stevens, San Jose State College; Dr. Warren Addicott, U. S. Geological Survey; and Dr. Leo Hertlein, California Academy of Sciences, identified several of the molluscan species and critically reviewed the manuscript at various stages. The writer is further indebted to Dr. Keith Macdonald, University of California, Santa Barbara, for discussions and interest, and to Dr. Kenneth Lajoie, U. S. Geological Survey, who educated the writer on geochronology." @default.
