Exile and migration then force and at the same time prompt contemporary African diasporic filmmakers to reconstruct themselves elsewhere. Even though the subjective experience of migration varies from one person to the other, it could be said that mobility and dislocation facilitate the acquisition of new points of view and different perspectives thus becoming a source of artistic creativity. In this paper we will explore how some of the major filmmakers of the African Diaspora such as Newton Aduaka, John Akomfrah, Haile Gerima, Balufu Bakupa Kanyinda, Dani Kouyate and Jean Odoutan - each one through his own specific cinematic aesthetic - translate their personal and artistic paths and their everyday lives into their films, characterized by non essentialist and postnationalist, multifaceted and changeable identities." @default.
