• W2378699686 abstract "There were two crucial political incidents of historical significance in the course of the history of modern China. Both were conducted by Peter H. L. Chang, i.e., changing the flag just symbolizing the Northeast China to another flag symbolizing the whole nation for unification in 1928 and launching a coupdetat in Xi'an to arrest Chiang KaiShek in 1936. Finding out the trace of his thought evolution in the period between the two incidents, some key points are discussed. In the period Chang thought the unification and patriotism were more important to him than being a feudal separatist, and dealt well with the relation between patriotism and regionalism and, further, boycotted the regionalism after the Incident on September·18 and Japanese occupation of Rehe Province. Later, Chang returned from Europe and launched the wellknown coupdetat in Xi'an while his thought changed greatly from Supporting Chiang KaiShek to suppress CP and resist Japanesetothreatening Chiang by force to unite CP so as to resist Japanese. It meant that his patriotism had been upgrading to a new and higher level." @default.
