- W2378962273 abstract "ABSTRACT Pre -processing, thresholding and post -processing stages are very important especially for very small target detection from infrared images. The effects of these stages to the final detection performance are measured in this study. Various methods for each stage are compared based on the final detection performance, which is defined by precision and recall values. Among various methods, the best method for each sta ge is selected and proved. For the pre -processing stage, local block based methods perform the best, nearly for all thresholding methods. The best thresholding method is chosen as the one, which does not need any user defined parameter. Finally, the post p rocessing method, which is suitable for the best performing pre -processing and thesholding methods is selected. INTRODUCTION Target detection from far distances helps the defense systems gain more respo nse time. Due to this reason, one of the main goals in automatic target detection is to detect target from the farthest possible distance. However, this requires the detection of the targets when they are very small such as 2 -3 pixels in the whole image. S mall targets have limited information such as shape, texture and intensity. This problem makes the small target detection a very difficult task. Another difficulty is background clutter. Background clutter causes an increase in false alarm rate, which may cause wrong pixels to be detected as targets. In this study, very small target detection in a single image frame is considered. Single frame target detection methods follow two main paths. They either estimate the background beforehand then subtract it fro m the image to obtain target areas or target is detected directly from the whole image content.
