- W2379487590 abstract "Three species of Carcharhinus Blainville collected from waters off Xisha Islands ofChina and the East China sea in 1973-1976 are considered as new to science. Theholotypes and paratypes are deposited in the East China Sea Fisheries Institute,National Bureau of Aquatic Products of China. Carcharhinus atrodorsus, sp. nov. (figs. 1-3) Diagnosis: Length of snout anterior to a line connecting outer ends of nostrilsabout 2/3 the distance between inner ends of nostrils. Anterior margin of nostril only very slightly expanded toward inner end, without a definite lobe. The free rear cornerof 2nd dorsal about 2.2 times as long as the vertical height. Midline of back with a lowbut distinct dermal ridge. Colour black above, grayish white below. The present species closely resembles C. falciformis, but is easily separable fromthe latter by the following characters: (1) origin of 2nd dorsal a little posterior tothat of anal; (2) origin of 1st dorsal posterior to inner corner of pectoral (about 2times as long as diameter of eye); (3) first gill opening about 2 times as long as dia-meter of eye; (4) out margin of pectoral 1.7 times as long as broad. Holotype No. SH73-0872, ?, total length 1093 mm, collected from waters offYongxing Island, Xisha Islands, on January 27, 1973. Carcharhinus obscurella, sp. nov. (figs. 4-6) Diagnosis: Length of snout anterior to a line connecting outer ends of nostrilsabout 3/5 the distance between inner ends of nostrils. Anterior valve of nostril slightlysinuous, without definite expansion. Origin of 2nd dorsal opposite that of anal. A lowdistinct dermal ridge along midline of back between the two dorsal fins, Back andapper side gray-brown, lower and under side pale. The present species closely resembles C. obscurus of the Atlantic Ocean, but is sepa-rable from the latter by the following characters: (1) the anterior edge of eye slightlyposterior to the front of mouth; (2) the inner end of nostril about 1/2 as far frommouth as from tip of snout; (3) mouth about 1.5-1.8 times as broad as long; (4) the3rd gill opening more than 2 times as long as diamter of eye; (5) the end of base of1st dorsal near the inner corner of pectoral; (6) the free rear corner of 2nd dorsalabout 1.7-2.3 times as long as the vertical height. Holotype No.SH75-0678, ?, total length 955 mm collected from waters off Chang-jiang (Yangtse) River mouth in the East China Sea on September 10, 1975. Paratypes 2?? 2??, total length 916-1705 mm, collected from the East ChinaSea in 1975-1976. Carcharhinus remotoides, sp. nov. (figs. 7-9) Diagnosis Upper precaudal pit strongly developed, the lower pit only weaklymarked. Length of snout anterior to a line connecting outer ends of nostrils about 3/5the distance between inner ends of nostrils. Anterior margin of nostril moderately ex-panded as a low subangular lobe with rounded apex. Origin of 2nd dorsal a littleposterior to that of anal. Back without mid-dorsal ridge. Brownish-gray above, palerbelow. Anterior tips of dorsals and upper caudal darker in colour, without conspicuousblack markings. The present species closely resembles C. remotus from the Atlantic Ocean, but differs in having trunk moderately stout, its height at lst dorsal about 1/5of its length from tip of snout to precaudal pit; caudal peduncle about as thick as deep;the free rear corner of 1st dorsal about 2/5 as long as the base; the free rear corner ofanal about as long as the base; pelvics longer than anal. Holotype No. SH75-0556, ?, total length 723 mm, April 23, 1975. Paratypes 1 ? 1 ?, total length 732-831 mm, 1975. Holotype and paratypes were all collected from waters off Zhoushan Islands(Zhejiang Province) in the East China Sea." @default.
