- W2380432816 abstract "Accumulation and elimination kinetics of heavy metals were studied in the oyster(Crassostrea rivularis) separately by single exposure to three nominal concentrations of Pb and Cd(50,100 and 200 μg/L,respectively) in a semi-static 30-or 40-day assay for each process.At the end of each sampling time(days 0,1,3,6,12,18,24 and 30) whole-body portions were surveyed for total Pb or Cd concentrations and,complimentarily,surveyed for whole-body metallothionein(MT) induction to assess its involvement in the processes.A first-order two-compartment kinetic model was employed to fit the experimental data in order to estimate the rate constants(k1 and k2) for uptake and elimination processes and to predict the bio-concentration factors(BCF) and biological half-life(B1/2).Results show a much greater concentration of Cd in vivo than Pb to the same exposure concentration,and so does BCF,which demonstrate that Crassostrea rivularis has a much better capacity to uptake Cd than Pb.When the balance between uptake from water and elimination from tissues occurs,the equilibrium concentrations of the metal in oyster(Cmax) is of a good linear relationship with the exposure concentrations,suggesting that Crassostrea rivularis could be used as an ideal bio-indicator for Pb and Cd pollution in water.During the Pb and Cd accumulation phase of the experiment,the MT concentrations in oysters were fluctuant: the tendencies of change went up first and then down,however,during the elimination phase,the MT concentrations in oysters became opposite.There is no correspondence between exposure concentration and MT induction.So,the present work reflects MT can not be used as an effective qualitative biomarker for Pb and Cd pollution in water." @default.
