- W2380668506 abstract "S tomatal crypts in the leaves of Eupatorium bupleurifolium (Compositae). The leaf anatomy of Eupatorium bupleurifolium De Candolle has been studied, with special refer ence to the occurrence of stomatal crypts. In these crypts situated on both epidermis, where near all the stomata are confined, 2 different types of glandular hairs are also present: a biseriate one sunken at the bottom of the cavity, flanked commonly by 2 uniseriate ones. No differences were observed in the crypt characters in specimens collected in humid as well as in dry habitats, not accomplishing therefore in this species a protective function of the stomata. Other leaf anatomical characters include: cuticle smooth or striated, anomocytic stomata, isolateral mesophyll with the palisade tissue less developed on the abaxial surface; midrib with simple or compound vascular system whether or not accompanied by sclerenchyma, bundle sheath complete enclosing vascular bundles and adaxial secretory canals accompanying them. As a result of a preliminary literature survey accomplished on the subject the occurrence of stomatal crypts has not been reported previously for this large genus; likewise this character was also absent in several Argentine species studied here, being therefore a diagnostic feature for E. bupleurifolium. A discussion about the influence of ecological factors on the occurrence of foliar crypts in other plants is also given." @default.
