• W2381306926 abstract "Objective To analyze the intelligence quotient(IQ)profile of the children with familial generalized tonic-clonic seizure(GTCS)and their siblings,and explore the factors influencing IQ of children with epilepsy further.Methods Twenty-eight children with GTCS aged 9-16 years in 20 epilepsy families in a mountain area of Southern Anhui province were selected as experimental group;28 healthy siblings of the children were randomly selected as control group 1,who did not have epilepsy and were closest in age to the children with epilepsy;the other healthy 30 children were assigned as control group 2,who had lived in the same village and were gender-age matched with the experimental group.The IQ of the 3 groups of children was compared,and all data of influencing IQ development of children and seizures of children with epilepsy at the same time were recorded.Results 1.In the experimental group,32% children had an average IQ and 21% of children had IQ above the average,which was significantly lower than that in control group 1 and control group 2,there were significant differences(Pa0.01)among 3 groups.2.The mean Full Scale IQ of children in the experimental group was significantly lower than that control group 1 and control group 2(Pa0.001).The difference between experimental group and 2 control groups were significant for almost all the subtest quotients except for the completion of drawing and picture arrangement.3.There were no significant differences between the control group 1 and the control group 2 in the IQ and the subtest quotients.4.IQ scores of children with epilepsy showed significant correlation with father's education,age at onset of epilepsy,duration of seizure disorder,seizure frequency and status epilepticus(r=0.453,0.506,-0.533,-0.708,-0.732 Pa0.05).5.The education levels of their fathers and duration of seizure disorder were the main factors affecting IQ of the children with epilepsy by the multiple stepwise regression analysis.Conclusions The IQ scores and subtest quotients of the children with fami-lial generalized epilepsy were significantly lower than those of the general children population;The IQ levels of the siblings of the children with epilepsy are similar to those of the general children population;Duration of seizure disorder is the most epilepsy-related variable influencing the IQ of the children with epilepsy;other epilepsy-related variables are status epilepticus,age at onset of epilepsy,the number of seizure occurrence,seizure frequency;The education level of fathers is an important factor affecting the IQ scores of the children with epilepsy." @default.
