- W2382075865 abstract "Although Korea was subject to the Qing Empire, sending tribute envoy to China after Qing replaced Ming, there still existed in the Korean society an ideological trend of respecting Ming and despising Qing as barbarians, due to their great esteem for the Chinese cultural, the political system of Ming, and their gratitude for the Ming’s military aid in the war against Japan during 1592—1598. Therefore, the thought that ″Korea is culturally a small China and superior to Qing″ was still prevailing in the Korean officials and scholars, and many of them even considered Korea the only country that inherited Chinese culture after the Ming period. However, Ming’s bureaucratic corruption, which partly resulted in the collapse of the Ming Empire, was also clearly realized by the tribute envoys to China from Korea. When the Qing court provided a favor treatment to the vassal states like Korea and kept a friendly relation with them, and China became politically stable and economically and culturally prosperous, some Korean political and scholarly elites, particularly the tribute envoys who were sent to China and contacted personally with the Chinese officials and scholars in the early Qing period, gradually realized that the Qing court undoubtedly inherited the traditional Chinese culture. Although they still considered Qing more or less the barbarians by their deeply rooted bias of the gap between barbarians and Chinese, they gradually got to understand that there was no reason to despise or expel Qing as barbarians.Based on such understanding and their experiences in the 18th century, the Korean envoys to China, outstanding from them being Hong Daeyong (1731—1783), Pak Jiwon (1737—1805) and Pak Jega (1750—1815), gradually abandoned the bias of barbarians and Chinese of the Ming period. In the process of accepting Western knowledge and Chinese culture from the Qing Empire, they proposed a new ideology of integrating barbarians into the Chinese learning in order to defeat them. That resulted in a theory of the Korean Northern Learning which meant to learn from China in the Qing period. In practice, the theory of the Northern Learning pursued the aims of a powerful country, the welfare of the people and eliminating social evils. In reality, this theory demonstrates a Korean superiority but it also brought Korea back to the traditional Chinese culture." @default.
