- W238216487 abstract "This chapter discusses the ontogenesis of central noradrenaline (NA) neurons after 6-hydroxydopamine treatment at birth. Systemic administration of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) to neonate rats causes a selective and permanent decrease of the NA levels in several forebrain regions, especially in the cerebral cortex, which is associated with a degeneration of the NA nerve terminals. The same treatment leads in addition to a considerable increase of the NA concentration in the pons-medulla region. Although the reason for this NA increase is not quite clear. The studies indicate that it may be related to both a collateral accumulation of NA and an increased outgrowth of NA nerve terminals. Fluorescence histochemical studies of the 7- and 21-day-old 6-OH-DA-treated rats showed strongly fluorescent accumulations of transmitter in ascending axons of the dorsal NA bundle, originating from cell bodies in the locus coeruleus. The dorsal NA bundle supplies NA nerve terminals to inter alia the cerebral cortex. Practically, no such accumulations of transmitter were found in the 42- and 70-day-old rats. Accumulations of transmitter after 6-OH-DA are signs of neuronal damage and degeneration, which may be related to a pile up of NA in the lesioned axon and/or possibly to a more diffuse destruction of the axoplasma transport mechanism." @default.
