- W2382938164 abstract "Objective To compare the cervical magnetic stimulation to conventional supramaximal bilateral percutaneous electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerves in the simplification of operation and the assessment of diaphragmatic strength in humans. Methods 13 normal subjects,9 subjects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 3 patients with COPD and respiratory failure received mechanical ventilation were studied. We measured the time taken to locate the phrenic nerves for conventional supramaximal bilateral percutaneous electrical stimulation or the place for cervical magnetic stimulation in all individuals and twitch transdiaphragmatic pressure following electric stimulation of the phrenic nerves [Pdi_ (t)e ] and cervical magnetic stimulation [Pdi_ (t)m ] were obtained in the 13 normal subjects and 12 COPD patients. Results In 13 normal subjects and 9 COPD patients, the time taken to locate the phrenic nerves by percutaneous electrical stimulation and the place for cervical magnetic stimulation was respectively (6.6±5.1)min and (1.0±0.2)min.They were significantly different (P0.01).The mean Pdi_ (t)m was 24.5 cm H_ 2 O,higher than Pdi_ (t)e (22.9 cm H_ 2 O) (P0.01)in the normal group. But in the COPD group, there was not different between them (P0.05).The within occasion coefficient of variation for Pdi_ (t)e was higher than that for Pdi_ (t)m in both the normal group and the COPD group. Conclusions Cervical magnetic stimulation is a simple, reproducible technique in the assessment of the diaphragmatic strength in both COPD patients and normal subjects." @default.
