- W2384698535 abstract "Objective To investigate the property of the phase-locked response and latency to pure tones in subdivisions of the inferior colliculus. Methods Recordings from single units of the inferior colliculus at a time were made with glass insulated tungsten electrodes in 14 pigmented guinea pigs. The main stimuli were pure tones with duration 200 ms,frequency ranged from 50 Hz to 3 000 Hz. Extracellular action potentials were discriminated using a level-crossing detector (SD1,Tucker-Davies Technologies). The characteristic frequency (CF) and frequency response area were determined by making automated frequency-intensity plots. Peristimulus time histograms were made of responses to 100 presentations of tones. At the termination of recording,two electrolytic lesions were made 1 mm apart by passing 5μA of current for 10 seconds. Period histogram was reconstructed,and the vector strength was calculated offline. The inferior colliculus was histologically processed. Sections were mounted on slides and stained to demonstrate cytochrome oxidase activity. The electrode tracks and recording positions of the units were reconstructed. Results The locations of 165 units were determined histologically. 11 units were in the lateral part of the dorsal cortex,18 in the external nucleus and 134 units were in the central nucleus. 73% units in the dorsal cortex,33% in the external nucleus and 75% in the central nucleus were phase-locked,respectively. Among the phase-locked units,the phase plots of 74% (63/85) units were linearity,and the rest were non-linearity. The ranges of latencies in the different divisions were: central nucleus,4.6 -15.4 ms(8.2 ± 2.8 ms); dorsal cortex,12.8-21.3 ms(16.5 ± 3.4 ms); external nucleus,12.1-14 ms (13.4 ± 0.9 ms). Conclusion The phase-locking and the latency in the subdivisions of the inferior colliculus are different. Their phase-locked inputs have variation. The inferior colliculus receive the inputs from upper auditory nucleus and cortex as well as lower auditory nucleus." @default.
