- W2385400243 abstract "Objective: To evaluate the influence of denture material and its surface roughness on retention of upper complete denture. Methods: Advancing contact angle and receding contact angle are tested when distilled water and saliva is trickled on pure titanium and polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) sample of different surface roughness. Then the difference between advancing contact angle and receding contact angle called contact angle hysteresis (θh) is calculated to evaluate wettability of water and saliva on pure titanium and PMMA. Results: 1. Effect of surface roughness on wettability is different between pure titanium and PMMA. In pure Ti groups, when Ra1.0 and Rz1.5,θh of saliva on pure titanium reduced with the increase of roughness, when Ra≥1.0 and Rz≥1.5,θh increased significantly(about 10°); In PMMA group, when Ra1.2 and Rz2,θh of saliva on PMMA remained the same with the increase of roughness,when Ra≥1.2 and Rz≥2,θh also improved significantly(about 9°).Under most circumstances,θh of saliva on titanium is higher than that on PMMA with the same surface roughness. 2. Advancing contact angle of distilled water on smooth PMMA and pure titanium(76.6±0.7and 57.3±1.0 respectively)is larger than that of saliva(74.1±1.0 and 54.2±1.1 respectively). Conclusions: Under most circumstance, wettability of saliva on pure titanium is better than that on PMMA,and this wettability could be improved by polishing or forming a rather rough surface(Ra≥1.0,Rz≥1.5). In view of wettability of saliva, pure titanium is better in retention when used as palatal plate material if appropriated tissue surface roughness could be achieved for upper complete denture ." @default.
