- W238553332 abstract "BEFORE REPORTING ON SIGNIFICANT SALES, I begin my column with a whimper. Stargardt of Berlin and Marburg, which has traditionally matched Sotheby's in offering major Beethoven items, held their spring sale on March 11-12 this year in Berlin. Their offerings were grouped into five major categories, with music being one of them. For this sale all they had in Beethoven was a snippet of music paper 1 1/4 inches by 7 1/2 inches, with a few bars in Beethoven's hand on either side, offered at a suggested price of 8,000 DM ($4,900). It is fitting to report that this lot found no buyer. Let us now move to things that were sold. All prices in foreign currencies have been converted to dollars at the exchange rate in effect at time of sale, with the addition of the buyer's premium. On May 26 in Paris the story was quite different than that which unfolded in Berlin. Pierre Beres, a noted rare book dealer, offered four pages of sketches for the String Quartet, Opus 95, known as the Quartet Serioso. The pages also contained material for the Overture to King Stephan, Opus 117. The sketch leaves were in fine condition and the lot was most attractive, as was the reported asking price of $500,000. (I do not know whether the 10% buyer's premium was supposed to be added or included at this figure.) It was reported that Mr. Beres was the owner as well as the auctioneer. The top bid was 902,000 French francs ($168,000), a far cry from the reserve, but a compliment to the moderating forces of the marketplace. Two days later, May 28, Sotheby's held its regular semi-annual sale of Fine Printed and Manuscript Music in London. This easily was the major music event of the year, not only for Beethoven, but for the other giants as well. Starting with printed music, there was a copy of Opus 48, six songs set by Beethoven to the poetry of Christian Geliert, with a reserve of £3,800 ($6,900). Though the copy was water-stained, it had large margins, no plate number and no dedicatee. The title page differed from the description in the reference books and the copy bore corrections in brown crayon. Rather than a copy from a print run, it appeared to be a proof copy, and thus very special. It is now in the Beethoven-Haus. There was no special mystique about the other printed music that was sold. A later issue of the first editions of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, bound together, brought £1,150 ($1,800); a copy of the Ninth Symphony without the subscriber list sold for £515 ($800). Two lots demonstrated the enormous economic boost given to anything which had been touched by the hand of Beethoven. A printed copy of the two-act version of Fidelia bearing a nine-word autograph inscription to Count Moritz Lichnowsky sold for £20,700 ($32,800), about twenty times more than an unsigned copy. A twopage manuscript of a Mozart fugue copied out by Beethoven fetched £19,550 ($31,000). A manuscript of the Opferlied, Opus 121b, in a scribal hand, twenty-two pages long, with corrections made by Beethoven, went for £32,200 ($51,000). Impressive, but one might easily add a zero to this price if it were entirely in Beethoven's hand. Two letters sold; one did not. There was a brief note to the publisher Diabelli, Anderson L. 1202, from 1823 asking to have some music sent to the composer. The estimated prices were £16,0000 -18,000 but it sold for £14,500 ($26,400). The other letter, much finer, was written to Johann Baptist Bach in 1824 (Anderson L. 1302). Bach was Beethoven's attorney at this time; the letter is essentially instructions for Beethoven's will. There is also a tender reference to the kindnesses of Franz and Antonie Brentano, a significant remark in view of what may have been his special relationship to Antonie. For the address on the envelope there is a typical Beethoven touch. He writes out the notes B-A-C-H, taking advantage of German music notation, which uses the pitches B for B-flat and H for B-natural. Offered at £35,0000 -40,000, this important letter sold for £35,000 ($63,800), a respectable sum, but certainly in line with current market values for a letter with such good content. …" @default.
