- W2387696516 abstract "Experiments were performed on rabbits under the anesthesia of urethane. Air containing 3.7% SO_2 was introduced into the lungs through the trachea as a stimulant. In some instances NH_3 was also used.Fine vagal nerve bundles were dissected at the level 2 cm below the thyroid cartilage with the peripheral end cut and single unit activity was recorded. Among 60 units four types of unit could be observed in accordance with patterns of discharges, the responses to gaseous stimulation and deflation or inflation of the lungs.Type Ⅰ. 24 units showed rapid bursts, synchronous with efferent discharges of the phrenic nerve. The frequency of the discharge of such units was increased immediately after introducing SO_2 or NH_3. The discharge of these units could be inhibited by inflation and augmented by deflation of the lungs, respectively.Type Ⅱ. In 14 units, continuous background or on-going discharges were recorded. They vary with inspiratory and expiratory phases of respiration, they do increase in frequency by introducing SO_2 or NH_3 into the lungs. They did not vary with pulmonary inflation or deflation.Type Ⅲ. 18 units, exhibiting irregular discharges, responded neither to gaseous stimuli nor to inflation or deflation of the lungs.Type Ⅳ. 9 units normally lacking background discharges, responded to both gaseous and inflation and deflation of the lungs.Repetitive application of gaseous stimuli may increase the responses of type Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅳ fibers. It is probably due to an alternation in the excitability of the central neurones concerned.Based on the present and previous works, we assume that the efferent vagal fibers of type Ⅰ and Ⅳ are main fibers which innervate the smooth muscle fibers in the wall of the air passage." @default.
