- W238783917 abstract "This issue of Generations explores the implications, challenges, and, indeed, opportunities arising from the near economic meltdown as they apply to older Americans and their families, the country's social programs, and the readers ?? Generations. Our guides are the guest editors Eric Kingson and Jennifer Hicks. They bring to bear their combined experience in business, policy making, and research and in the real world of family vulnerability and resilience, work, personal finance, and care. Eric Kingson is a professor at Syracuse University's School of Social Work and a senior research associate at the Maxwell School's Center for Policy Research. A preeminent authority on social insurance, he has served as an advisor to presidential commissions on Social Security and entitlement and tax reform. Active in the Obama campaign, he later served on the advisory committee to the Social Security Administration's transition team. He is a prolific author, with publications praised for scholarship and astute policy analysis as well as compassion and practical applicability. His books, for example, range from Ties Bind: Interdependence of Generations to Social Security in the Twenty-First Century, of which he is coeditor, to Lessons from Joan: Living and Loving with Cancer, a Husband's Story, which is based on personal experiences and provides guidance for others navigating the healthcare system. His latest book, In Their Own Voices, presents the stories and advice of fourteen children who face life-threatening illness. Kingson's interest in the effects of economics and politics on vulnerable individuals arose in the 1960s when he became engaged in the civil rights and antiwar movements during college. That experience set the direction of my life, Kingson says. He earned a doctorate at Brandeis's Heller School, focusing on economic security in later life. About the unfolding Great Recession, Kingson says, The main message is that economic and social structures have very personal consequences. Behind the near economic collapse and its aftermath are individuals and families who have seen their incomes and savings diminished, sometimes shattered, their dignity assaulted. It's a result of the rampant deregulation of financial institutions and the greed of too many leaders. Our system failed many hard-working people. The current meltdown is not the Great Depression, but it has shaken us in a fundamental way. It has made people realize their vulnerability and their connection to others. I hope it underlines that we need to strengthen our public structures- that they are fundamental to maintaining a decent life for all. As this issue makes clear, Kingson says, Social Security is more important than ever. For the next couple of years, he plans to devote much of his energy to codirecting, with Nancy Altman (another contributor to the issue), a recently funded project that seeks to protect and improve the economic security of at-risk populations in the context of the next round of Social Security legislation, working along with national, state, and regional organizations. …" @default.
