- W2388348540 abstract "Brown Gilman have once done an investigation on the second person pronouns in several European languages, and therefore put forward the ideas that the use of second person pronouns is decided by the two semantic relations: power relation and solitary relation. The former refers to the language communication carried on between people of different social status, while the latter is the language used between the intimate and equal peers.Brown Ford then worked out the reciprocal pattern and non-reciprocal pattern after they examined the social conventions of addressing each other in American English. The paper focuses on the address forms between English and Chinese, and then with the theory of power relation and solitary relation,it analyzes the English and Chinese reciprocal patterns and non-reciprocal patterns respectively. The paper concludes that the two languages share common patterns of address forms though differences still exist." @default.
