- W2388368397 abstract "Although fuzzy linguistics got off to a late start in China, its speed of development has been the fastest and its influences the most far-reaching among many branches of linguistics. Fuzzy linguistic research started in China in the late 1970s. The publication of WU Tie-pin's article A Preliminary Research on Fuzzy Language in Foreign Languages (1979, 4), which was regarded by academia as the earliest essay in China dealing with the fuzziness of language in terms of fuzzy theory, marked the birth of fuzzy linguistics in China. In the following 20 years, WU published more than 36 research papers on fuzzy linguistics, playing an essential role in pushing forward the study of fuzzy linguistics in China. This paper reviews WU's Fuzzy Linguistics in term of its methodological significance. WU's successes in fuzzy linguistic research evidently owe much to the methods he used in his researches, which can be summarized as follows: (1) a qualitative descriptive method of flexible adaptability was introduced for various objects to be studied, which follows the principles and main ideas of L.A. Zadeh's fuzzy set theory but does not take the form in which Zadeh testified, applied and enriched his theories. In this way WU practically founded the Fuzzy Linguistics of Qualitative Analysis; (2) both diachronic and synchronic comparisons were made among the words (including the Chinese Zi) with fuzzy meanings in several dozens of languages including English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Danish, Swedish, Chinese and some dialects and minority languages in China. These methods of comparison were so frequently used in WU's fuzzy linguistic research that his work was highly regarded as a kind of comparative lexical study or comparative semantic study; (3) cultural micro-analysis was made on the fuzzy meanings of words from many different languages etymologically as well as through synchronic semantic comparisons. One of the most important illumination that WU's Fuzzy Linguistics has brought to the linguists in China is that new linguistic research methods of specific adaptability which aim at the variability of the concrete linguistic phenomena should be pursued to make the linguistic research in China develop more vigorously." @default.
