- W2389032016 abstract "During our recent investigation on the small mammals from Szechuan, five rare spe-cies are found to be new records to the mammalian fauna of Szechuan and the groove-toothed flying squirrel is considered to be a new subspecies. They may be listed below, together with systematic notes or diagnosis: ORDER INSECTIVORA Parascaptor leucurus Blyth An adult female was collected from Char-bu-lan, Muli District, at an altitude ofabout 2,000 m. The tail shows no white color at its tip. Soriculus parva Allen An adult male was secured from the same locality as above. It was formerly des-cribed by G. Allen (1923) as a subspecies of S. hypsibius, and later (1938) treated asa valid species by the same author. Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951), who seem tohave overlumped the Chinese forms of insectivores, referred it to a subspecies of S.hypsibius again. On account of its considerably smaller size and its distributional rangeoverlapping with that of S. hypsibius in the southwestern Szechuan and northwesternYunnan without any signs of hybridization, we agree with G. Allen in retaining it as avalid species. Chimarrogale himalayica himalayica Gray An adult male was collected from Kintang. It is characterized by the rather heavydrab color of the body, as being compared with C. styani, with which it occurs together inSzechuan. Because of the relationships between C. himalayica C. styani and C. platy-cephala still remain doubtful, it seems better to retain both himalayica and styani specifi-cally until further classification is made. ORDER RODENTIA Aeretes melanopterus szechuanensis, subsp. nov. Holotype: No. 00780, adult female, collected on May 24, 1959, from Hei-shui Dis-trict, Szechuan Province. Allotype: No. 00777, adult male, collected on May 30, 1959, from the same localityas holotype. Paratypes: No. 00776, 00781, adult female and male respectively, both collectedfrom the same locality. The holotype and the allotype are deposited at the Health Center, Szechuan, and theInstitute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, Peking respectively. Diagnosis: Distinguishable from the nominate subspecies by its larger size, with thehead and body combined measuring 347 (334-355) mm in length, the skull 64.9 (64.0-66.0) mm at its greatest length and by its darker pelage, with the upper surface beingdark greyish-drab and the underparts duller buffy-white in color. In the topotypes of A.m. melanopterus (3 skins and 1 skull), the head and body combined measure 275-328 mm in length, and the condylo-basilar length of the skull is only 53 mm. Its pelageshows a duller sandy buff tone above, and is dull white washed only with a little buffytone below. The skull of the present subspecies differs from the latter, in addition, byits broader basioccipital region between the bullae. Description: Size large, with its tail of about the same length as the head and bodycombined. Mammae 3 pairs, from breast to abdomen. The entire upper surface of thehead and body as well as the tail covered with long and bushy hairs. The summer pelageof the adults mixed of slaty grey, dull brown and pale buff, giving a general tinge of darkgreyish drab more or less washed with hoary-white posteriorly. The individual hair darkslaty at its basal three-fourths, sandy-brown subterminally, and with a little black tip.The flying membrane covered above with black hairs with rusty-brown tips, and edgedwith light gray hairs laterally. Its under surface nearly pure rusty brown haired. Thewhole belly bright buffy-white in color, turning to light buff laterally. The head similarto the back, but a little lighter and washed with some brownish tone round the ear andeye. The skull showing no important differences with the nominate race, except for itslarger size, the narrower interorbital region, and the broader basioccipital between thebullae. The upper incisors rather broad, with their front surfaces grooved as in the nomi-nate form. Proedromys bedfordi Thomas An adult female was captured from Hei-shui District (alt. 2550m). So far as known, the monotypical genus Proedromys is represented only by a singletype" @default.
