- W2389970904 abstract "Objective To evaluate the effects of black rice pigment fraction (BRF) through dietary supplementation on the oxidative stress response, inflammation and lipid levels in the patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Method Sixty CHD patients with age from 45~75 years were recruited in the Second Affiliated Hospital of SUN Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, and randomly divided into the two groups. For the experimental group,10 g BRF was kept being supplemented daily per patient for 6 months in addition to the normal treatment. As a control,10 g white rice fraction (BRF) was substituted for the placebo group. Additionally, three volunteers were selected from the experimental and placebo group individually, from whom 10 mL blood in their elbow vein has been collected before and after intake of BRF at the time points of 0.5,1,1.5,2,and 4 h. Then, the level of anthocyanins in plasma from these patients was assayed by high performance liquid chromatography. Results An increase of the plasma total antioxidant capacity (1.3 ± 3.0) kU/L from the baseline was observed in the experiment group but a decrease (0.6 ± 1.7) kU/L from the baseline was showed in the placebo group with significant difference (P 0.05). Furthermore,BRF treatment over 6 months led to significant decrease for the levels of most inflammatory biomarkers, such as plasma sVCAM-1 from (1.4 ± 0.8) g/L to (1.0 ± 0.5) g/L,sCD40L from (8.4 ± 4.1) mg/L to (5.7 ± 2.4) mg/L and hs-CRP from (3.8 ± 1.8) mg/L to (2.6 ± 1.7) mg/L (P 0.05),whereas the values of these biomarkers were almost same to the baseline values in the WRF group. However,no significant effects on plasma lipids and superoxide dismutase activity were observed in both groups after 6-month intervention. In addition, anthocyanin (cyanidin-3-glucose) was only assayed in the plasma from the patients in the group with the highest concentration of (20.2 ± 3.0) mg/L at the time point of 1.5 h after intake of BRF,but not in that of patients with WRF supplementation for all time points assayed. Conclusion Consumption of BRF for dietary in addition to the normal treatment can improve the antioxidative capacity and decrease some cardiovascular risk factors in CHD patients, which is probably related to the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of anthocyanins rich in BRF." @default.
