• W2391275359 abstract "The origin and development of Nanjing City is closedly related to the natural changes of the Yangtze River. The natural geographical environment has produced the urban structure of this ancient capital. However, in the current urban planning proposal, the protection of its ancient capital views has not been included in the study of the geographical environment system; it lacks analysis on the natural environmental changes of this historic city; no effort is made to trace back to the city’s relics by following the natural water system and the uninterrupted mountain system; and natural landscape preservation planning from the point of view of geography is not considered in the urban planning. At present, Nanjing’s famous historic scenries include: the Clock Hill and the Stone City, which enjoy the reputation of “Place of Hidden Dragon and Crouching Tiger ”, and the Yangtze River in the suburb, historic rivers and lakes such as Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake and Mochou Lake in the urban area. Nanjing’s geographical structure is formed on basis of the three branches of the west section of Ningzhen Range. In the ancient times, two mountain ridges stand like a screen in front of the continuous range which connects the west, north and east sections of the Ningzhen Range. The Stone Hill, especially, situates at the side of Yangtze River, which occupies a very important military position. The relics of the New Stone Age are mainly distributed along the Qinhuai River and Jinchuan River. These two rivers are the branches of the Yangtze River, which produced the alluvial plains on the highlands of Nanjing City. Since the Ming Dynasty, the Nanjing citizens began to reside along the Yangtze River. The natural landform of Nanjing had been attractive enough to make it the capital of China for quite a few times in the history. Even during the period when it was not the capital of the State, it had been a city with great influence on China’ s politics, economy and culture. How to protect the natural landscape while we construct the modern city? How shall we continue to present the views of the ancient capital city in an urban space? This is an urgent issue which is worthy of studying. There are many historically famous cultural relics which are perfectly integrated with the natural topography, and they could still be traced till now. Therefore, the urban planning of Nanjing should inherit its own excellent traditions." @default.
