- W2391370340 abstract "The belief of Mazu (a goddess of in Chinese legend ) originated in Meizhou Island, Putian, Fujian Province. Mazu was given title of the goddess of sea in Song Dynasty, and thus became famous all over world. The evolution of belief of Mazu has unique feature - localization of this belief in Ryukyu, which is now Okinawa, Japan. The legend of saving rather than evolved into legend of saving brother rather than father when disseminated into Ryukyu. The cause of this evolution is that Chinese society is based on Confucian ethics which demands respect for elder, while belief of Ryukyu local goddess - Wonari goddess was deep rooted and had a great influence. As a result, essential change happened to basis of belief of Mazu when it was disseminated into Ryukyu. With confliction and fusion of these two different beliefs, Mazu in end became carrier of Wonari goddess and was generally accepted by Ryukyu people." @default.
