- W2391497430 abstract "The biotoxicity of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and some of their metabolites were studied by Microtox test. It has been found that some kinds of PAHs such as naphthalene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene had acute toxicity to the test microbes in the water solution produced using DMSO solvent. The toxicity of phenanthrene was stronger than that of naphthalene at the same concentration. The inhibitory effect of luminosity in the solution of naphthalene was up to 100 % under its solubility. The inhibitory effect of luminosity in the solution of phenanthrene and fluoranthene was only up to 50 % and 15 % at the concentration near its solubility, respectively. However, anthracene and pyrene had no effect on the microbes even at their highest concentration. The metabolites of PAHs such as salicylate, catechol and o-phthalate had acute toxicity to the test microbes too. The toxicity of the metabolites was much lower than that of their parent compound naphthalene and phenanthrene. And the detoxification of phenanthrene through salicylate route was superior to that of through o-phthalate route. It appears that the sensitivity of the detection of the toxicity of PAHs by Microtox test is restricted to their low solubility, and the toxicity observed in the leachates of PAHs contamination is linked to the low molecular PAHs such as naphthalene and phenanthrene. It also appears that a notable detoxification occurs in the later period of the biodegradation of the low molecular PAHs even though the metabolites are toxic to the test microbes, and the extent of the detoxification of PAHs differs through different biodegradation route." @default.
