- W2391521614 abstract "Objectives To epidemiologically characterize human infection of Streptococcus suis and provide scientific evidences for control measure development. Methods Epidemiological investigations had been conducted on the cases of streptococcus suis infection reported in Guangxi.Bacteriological cultures and genetic analysis were performed on the specimens collected from those cases. And the data was computerized and analyzed using epidemiological tools. Results The cases were found sporadically, yet most of them in summer and autumn. The disease mainly attacked the aged males, farmers and swine butchers.76.19% of the cases were contracted by the micro-organisms through minor cuts in fingers when handling pork or viscera of swine attacked or died from the streptococcus suis infection. The signs and symptoms of the cases were observed, such as fever with chill, headache, vomiting, coma or confusion, muscle pain, stiff neck, rashes of skin and shock, etc. The presence of Kernig sign, rashes of skin, shock and multiple organ failure were significantly different between cases with meningitis and those with toxic-shock.The cases of developing into meningitis,toxic-shock and ordinary types accounted for 52.38%,38.10% and 9.52% of the total cases, respectively.Of the cases,66.67% was cured and the remaining 33.33% was dead.35.71% of them survived with sequelae. The medium of incubation period was 42 hours and the medium of interval between date of onset and date of visiting hospitals at county level or above was 2 days.Statistically, the medium of disease duration was 3 days in patients died, and 20 days in those survived. Conclusion No person-to-person transmission has been found in Guangxi. The important transmission mode was direct contact with pork or viscera of swine attacked or died from the streptococcus suis infection. It is necessary to warn the communities to avoid slaughter of sick or dead swine.Early actions are needed to prevent shock and disabilities caused by toxic-shock due to streptococcus suis and streptococcus suis meningitis, since the former is believed to evolve rapidly with short disease course and high case fatality, and the latter was observed with high incidence of sequelae." @default.
