- W2392240275 abstract "Numerous sandflies were collected in caves in Chung-Kiang Hsien and Li-Ping Hsien, Kweichow Province. Four species of sandflies were identified, namely Phlcbo-tomus (Euphlebotomus) kiangsuensis Yao et Wu, Phlebotomus (Euphlebotomus) tumenensis Wang et Chang, Phlebotomus (Adlerius) chinensis Newstead and Sergentomyia longiforceps sp. nov.Sergentomyia longiforceps sp. nov.Large sandfly, with numerous erect hairs on abdominal tergites II-VI of both sexes. The buccal armature consists of more than 60 small triangular teeth, arranged in rows, without pigment area. The pharyngeal armature composed of many wedge-shaped teeth of different sizes, arranged irregularly. The spermatheca is rather large, like a carrot, unsegmented, with some irregular wrinkles. The male terminalia is very long, coxite without process, bearing a tuft of long hairs on its tip; style bears three spines, one is at the apex; paramere single and claw-shaped.Specimens: Holotype male, allotype female, paratypes 3 females and 7 males were collected in caves in Chung-Kiang Hsien, Kweichow Province, July, 1963. All specimens are deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Kweiyang Medical College. This sandfly is a large, specialized, cave-dwelling form. The old world species, Phlebotomus gigas Parrot et Schwetz and Sergentomyia mirabilis Parrot et Wanson are distributed in Africa only, both are similar in form and habitat. However, P. gigas is provided with erect hairs, without buccal armature and pigment area, hence it ought to be designated to the genus Phlebotomus; while S. mirabilis bearing recumbent hairs, with buecal armature well developed, and with pigment area, therefore it must be included in the genus Sergentomyia. Owing to their specialized form, the cave-dwelling habitat and addict to the blood of bat, Theodor (1948) suggested that it might be more convenient to separate these two species entirely from these genera. Our species of sandfly is characterized by the possession of erect hairs on its abdomen, but with buccal armature well developed, and spermatheca unsegmented and wrinkled. Furthermore, the male genitalia of S. longiforceps sp. nov. bears three spines on the style and one is at the apex. It is evidently different from either Phlebotomus or Sergentomyia, the former commonly with four spines and the latter with 4-5. The only exception is Phlebotomus (Australophlebotomus) brevifilis Tonnoir, which has three spines and distributed in Australia. Thus it is unfitly designated to either of these two genera, and it seems feasible to erect a new genus for it." @default.
