- W2393033500 abstract "The life history of Echinostoma murinum has been studied by Tubangui(1932) and Wu(1950).In view of the discrepancies with regard to the morphology of E.murinum described by Tubangui in 1931 and in his later publication(Tubangui 1932),and in view of the possible confusion of its larval stages with those of other closelyrelated forms, such as Echinostoma revolutum and Echinoparyphium recurvatum, thepresent experimental and morphological studies were made to determine more preci-sely the different developmental stages belonging to this trematode. It is hoped (?)hatthe present study will afford comparison with other closely related species.Theresult of the study is as follows:1.Encysted metaceriae, fed to experimental animals, developed into full-grownadults after ten to twelve days in white rats and young puppies, but failed to developin ducklings and chickens.2.The first intermediate host in Foochow is Gyraulus convexiusculus Huttonas proved by experimental infection and also by finding the naturally infected snail. The writer failed to infect other snails such as Lymnaea plicatula Benson,Lymnaeaollula Gould,Hippeutis cantori Benson,Parafossarulus striatulus(Benson),Seg-menting hemisphaerula Benson by repeated exposure to the miracidia of E.murinum.3.Five spacies of snails, such as G.convexiusculus,H.cantori,S.hemispha-erula,L.plicatula,L.ollula and P.striatulus, served as the second intermediatehosts. The metacercariae encysted in the body of these snails.4.The usual definitive host in Foochow is the field rat.(Rattus losea exiguusA.B.Howell)5.Different developmental stages were redescribed in detail. The sporocyst ofthis tramtade which has not been hitherto repor(?)ed by previous workers, was described here for the first time.6.The sporocysts developed in the ventricle of the snail host. This organseems to be the usual location of the sporocysts of several species of bird and mam-malian echinostomes. The sporocyst of E.murinum possesses five or six mother re-dine.7.The redia of this species can be differentiated from that of E.revolutum byits larger pharynx, shorter and larger sac-like gut, while in the latter the gut is nar-row and long, extending approximately to the middle of the body of redia. The cer-caria of E.murinum possesses no penetration glands. The metacercaria is smallerthan that of E.revolutum with thiner cyst wall. All these characters afford one todifferentiate this trematode from other closely related species." @default.
