- W2393359172 abstract "Objective To evaluate the efficacy of bioabsorbable polymeric coils Matrix incorporating basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) for embolization of carotid aneurysms in a rat model and the feasibility as a drug delivery system. Methods 64 SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups with 16 rats in each group: group sham operation, group GDC, group Matrix and group bFGF-Matrix. Guglielmi detachable coils (GDC) and Matrix were sectioned into Ten-millimeter segments. A segment of GDC or Matrix or bFGF-Matrix was implanted into a rat ligated common carotid artery (CCA) respectively. Half of the rats were killed at 2 weeks, and the rest were killed at 4 weeks after embolization. Comparative histopathological data were analyzed. Results At 2 weeks and 4 weeks after embolization, the CCA lumen of group sham operation and group GDC were filled with blood elements, and thin cellular response was demonstrated; The CCA lumen of group Matrix and group bFGF-Matrix,however,were filled with marked cellular proliferation such as neointimal hyperplasia, and vessel walls became thickened and showed fibrosis. The proliferated tissue in the arterial lumen mainly stained blue with Masson trichrome. Cellular components consisted of fibroblasts ,smooth muscle cells (α-Actin-positive) and endothelial cells (Factor Ⅷ-positive).The mean CCA luminal areas of group GDC were significantly smaller in comparison with those of group Matrix (P0.05) and group GDC with group bFGF-Matrix (P0.05). The mean ratio of the thickness of proliferated tissue to the vascular diameter of group bFGF-Matrix was significantly greater than that of group Matrix (P0.05) and group GDC (P0.05), and also that of group Matrix was greater than that of group GDC (P0.05). Conclusions Matrix may induce cellular response and fibrosis inside aneurysms, and accelerate aneurysm occlusion. This coil has the potential to be used as a drug delivery system and may deliver various bioactive materials into local area to enhance aneurysms healing." @default.
