- W2394901876 abstract "“What is `blended learning'? It's the use of two or more distinct methods of training. This may include combinations such as: blending classroom instruction with online instruction, blending online instruction with access to a coach or faculty member or blending simulations with structured courses.”So said Elliot Masie, a leading authority on e-learning.1 Blended learning involves offering different options to learners. As most learners have different learning styles, they are then more likely to find something that suits them. But good blended learning should be more than just a simple “pick and mix” approach. The “pick and mix” approach involves looking at what learning resources you've got and sticking them together to make a course. Such courses often offer the same material in different formats (and, at their worst, different parts of the course contradict each other). If you are thinking about setting up a course then you should think through these issues. What are the optimal blends to suit your learners? If you are running a course on cardiology for a group of registrars, then you should consider combining online learning content, so your students can learn knowledge; work based approaches for practical skills; and perhaps online discussion groups or face to face debates on ethical dilemmas, so that they can develop their feelings and attitudes. This is a good blend—you are using learning technology that is tailored to achieve the outcomes that you want. You have also concentrated on the “3 Rs” of medical education—knowledge, skills, and attitudes. A poor blend would be to teach practical skills in lectures and to advise students to develop communication skills from reading textbooks. At BMJ Learning, we publish different types of resources according to the learning outcomes that our authors are trying to achieve. In “read, reflect, respond” modules we encourage you to read about a topic, think over the issues outlined, and give your opinions. One of our latest such modules is on discharge planning—for which there is rarely an absolutely right answer—and the reflective format allows author and readers to suggest possible solutions to some common dilemmas. For example, how would you plan the discharge of a 75 year old man who is severely disabled? You think he should go to a local nursing home, but his family insists that he would be better off with them. He is too confused to let you know what he would like. To find out what the author and other readers would do in this circumstance have a look at www.bmjlearning.com. You can also contribute your own solutions to the debate." @default.
