- W2395565014 abstract "Production data were collected over a 5-yr period for three groups of crossbred cows managed under two forage systems. Birth weight, weaning weight, and total weight of calves produced over the 5-yr period were analyzed. Cows were randomly assigned to two forage systems; fescue only or fescue + clover. There were 25 Polled Hereford x Angus (HA), 28 Charolais x Angus (CA), and 27 Simmental x Angus (SA) cows that started on the fescue only system, and 26 HA, 27 CA, and 23 SA cows that started on the fescue + clover system. The latter group weaned 13% more cumulative weight (P<.05) of calf per cow during the 5-yr study than cows on the fescue only system. Adjusted 205-day weight (AWW) of all calves was 200 kilograms (kg) while actual weaning weight (WW) was 191 kg. Total cumulative weaning weight (TWW) for the 5-yr period for HA, CA, and SA cows was 480, 557, and 529 kg of calf per cow, respectively. Addition of clover to the forage system increased TWW for the 5-yr period by 64 kg. Total cumulative calf adjusted weaning weight (TAWW) of fescue only was 450, 601, and 522 kg for HA, CA, and SA cows, respectively, while the same cow breed groups on fescue + clover pastures produced 559, 571, and 628 kg, respectively. Although HA cows produced calves with lower (P<.05) birth weights than CA and SA cows, no differences were observed for calving assistance or calf survival scores. There were 3% more pregnant cows each year on the fescue + clover forage system than on the fescue only system." @default.
